Tips & Tricks For Jump Rings

Over the years through trial and error we have complied the best tips and tricks for ensuring the use of the best jump rings for any project. Every project calls for a different gauge or sized jump ring but there are a things that should be taken into account when selecting the correct gauge, size, & material for your project.

Here are our  tips and tricks to remember when you are searching for the perfect jump ring:

* Every jump ring is only as good ad its closure so always ensure that your rings are closed securely for the best hold. Here is the process of doing that in a how to video by one of our team members:

*With open jump rings the issue is that once in a while the opening for even the larger gauges such as 16 gauge may randomly fall right where the tension is greatest and pull it open, or if it twists, the torque will pop it open. Because of this we often recommend doubling up on the rings. When you use 2, not only do you have a stronger base to start, but the chances that the openings of both rings line up at the moment of great tension is very very small.

*Thicker is always stronger but Bigger is not always better! We recommend using smaller diameters and thicker gauges when at all possible.

* Jump rings larger than 4mm need to be doubled up in most applications as they are weaker the larger they are as there is more surface area.
Exceptions:
When you can use 1 thicker ring (16 gauge or even 14 gauge)
When there is no weight or stress on the ring( so if your earrings did not have the ceramic discs)
When you can use an oval jump ring (the cut is on the long side and that us usually not where the stress is)
When you can use a harder metal (bronze, stainless steel, iron)

* Rings created with a harder temper wire will also have a little more strength to them.

*Solid metals are the best option for heaver projects requiring jump rings as they do have a greater strength.
